KEEPING YOUR LOANS KOSHER
As the Shmitta year of 5768 draws to a close, outstanding loans to other Jews need be addressed.
One of the halachos unique to Shmitta is Shmittas Kesafim, the cancellation of all debts owed by one Jew to another, impressing upon us the reality that we are, ultimately, not the eternal owners of anything.
Observing the hesitancy of people to loan money just prior to / and or during the Shmitta year, Hillel Hazakein emphasised the halachah that only private debts are cancelled by Shmitta, and enacted the writing of a pruzbol, transferring the debt over to a Beis Din. The Court (afforded the right of collection), may at any time appoint the lender as its agent to collect the monies due.
In designing the Pruzbol, Hillel not only assisted the needy, but, simultaneously, enabled baalei chesed to continue their charity.
On Sunday September 14, 14 Elul 5768, a Beis Din will be convened in the Mizrachi Lamm Boardroom at 8.40 a.m. for the purpose of writing such documents on behalf of anyone having outstanding loans. This applies even to those who signed such documents on September 9, 2007, 26 Elul 5767.
At this time of year, all of us are seriously knocking on G-d's door, asking Him to erase the debts of our sins. May the attention we afford the year of Shmitta and its lessons of communal responsibility act in our favour.
A Ketiva vachatimah tovah to all, for a year of good health, Torah growth, nachas, prosperity and joy.
