TRAFFIC LIGHT SITUATION PROGRESSING WELL
03 December 2008
John Searle, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, the peak body of Victorian Jewry said today:
“I am pleased to announce that following negotiation with Vic Roads, auto-introductions (ie an automatic ‘green man’) will operate from 4.30pm – 9.30pm every Friday and 7.00am – 9.30pm every Saturday, at no cost to the community.
This will commence this coming Friday, 5 December, at the following intersections:
Balaclava/Orrong
Glen Eira/Bambra
Glen Eira/Kooyong
Glen Eira/Orrong
Glenhuntly/Bambra
Hawthorn/Balaclava
Hawthorn/Glen Eira
Hawthorn/Glenhuntly
Hotham/Alma
Hotham/Balaclava
Hotham/Glen Eira
Hotham/Inkerman
Kooyong/Balaclava
Kooyong/Glenhuntly
Malvern/Glenferrie

Auto-introduction times will also be adjusted for Jewish festivals on an ongoing basis.
This is a great result that will help ensure the safety of Jewish pedestrians on the Sabbath and Holy Days.

Further discussions are to take place with other authorities in regard to intersections that are their responsibility. The JCCV will keep the community informed.

The JCCV wishes to thank stakeholders, the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria, the Rabbinical Council of Victoria and Marcia Pinskier of the Victorian Multicultural Commission for their participation in this process.

In addition it wishes to thank Victoria Police and Vic Roads for their cooperation and indeed more than that, their willingness to help. This has been an inspiring example of multiculturalism in action.”

Additional Notes

The auto-introduction has been extended to 10.00pm to cater for those shuls that have a later Shabbos finish time.

Some queries in relation to other intersections not being included are being dealt with.

Eventually all intersections on the COSV’s list will be worked through. However this will involve negotiations with two councils and another Vic Roads area office. At this stage, I will not be able to arrange such a meeting until 2009. The question of who will bear the costs of modifying the other intersections – which appear inevitable – still remains to be resolved.

Please put this on your website as well.   I am also awaiting Melbourne Yomtov dates for the next 15 years so that they can be programmed in.
