כ"ט סיון ה' אלפים תשס"ט
The Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) is pleased to advise that notwithstanding recent letters and articles that have been widely circulated within the community, the RCV has facilitated an amicable eleventh hour meeting at which an in principle agreement was reached regarding the way forward in the matter of the potential dissolution of the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria (COSV).
The meeting took place on Thursday night at the home of RCV President, Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, and was attended by Romy Leibler on behalf of Melbourne Beth Din Nominees Ltd and Melbourne Eruv Ltd, David Sherr of Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, Dr Gary Frydman, President of Caulfield Hebrew Congregation (CHC) and Stephen Pinch, President of St Kilda Hebrew Congregation. Discussion centred on concerns regarding the funding of the COSV and possible solutions to what appeared to be a stalemate and forgone conclusion.
Dr Frydman reiterated his Board's unequivocal support for the COSV and its important activities and committed to bill and collect the COSV levy in much the same way as other COSV member synagogues have done since the inception of Melbourne Beth Din Nominees Ltd in 2005.
David Sherr and Stephen Pinch were satisfied that, subject to their respective Boards’ approval, this commitment by the Board of the CHC warranted the ongoing support of the COSV by their own congregations. This outcome will be tabled at the forthcoming meeting to be attended by COSV Presidents and the RCV which will take place on Tuesday evening, 23 June 2009. Those in attendance expressed the hope that all COSV members will ratify a proposed resolution to unreservedly support the COSV in the same way.
Rabbi Kluwgant, who chaired the meeting, made it clear in his opening statement that unless the matter was resolved the COSV would likely be dissolved and the ongoing functionality of Melbourne Beth Din Nominees Ltd and Melbourne Eruv Ltd would come under serious threat. "It is clear that the COSV has some serious internal issues requiring urgent attention, and I am both hopeful and confident that they will address these expeditiously in an open and transparent manner," he said.
"It did not take long for it to become clear that we really all share the same vision; it was just a matter of putting all the pieces back together."
