The COSV cosponsored a Kashrut Awareness Evening held at the Werdiger Hall on Motzaei Shabbat, August 10. Other sponsors included Kosher Australia, Kollel Menachem and Kollel Beth HaTalmud.
Some 400 people attended to hear presentations by a panel of four experts, Rabbi Mordechai Gutnick (Rabbinic Administrator, Kosher Australia), Rabbi Yaacov Barber (Rabbinic Board, Kosher Australia), Mr Kasriel Oliver (Investigating Chemist) and Mr Yankel Wajsport , General Manager, Kosher Australia.
Topics covered ranged from an explanation as to why ingredient lists do not suffice to indicate product status, to an explanation of issues relevant to the current Shechitah controversy as featured in the daily press. Answers were also given to some twenty questions that had either been emailed to the panel in advance or asked on the evening. Rabbi Gutnick invited anyone with Kashrut questions or concerns to contact Kosher Australia. Indications were given of an intention by private individuals to establish in Melbourne a Kosher Consumers Association similar to the one operative in Sydney.
