The Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria recently held the second of its bi-annual meetings of Presidents of Member Shules.
The Meeting was hosted by Mizrachi and Synagogues represented included Brighton, South Caulfield, St Kilda, East Melbourne, Ohel Devorah, Elsternwick, Kew, Doncaster and Blake Street.
President of the COSV, Paul Korbl reported on a variety of proposed activities and initiatives matters including the Hebrew Reading classes, Scholar in Residence Program, expansion of Sick Visiting and Yom Tov hospitality services and the Global Day of Learning Program, initiated by well know Israeli educator and personality Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz scheduled to be held on Sunday 7th Nov 2010 simultaneously around the world.
The President stressed the intention of the COSV Board to do its utmost to ensure that all Shules and Minyanim throughout Melbourne accept equal responsibility for sharing the cost of maintaining the Orthodox Community’s infrastructure including the Melbourne Eruv and Melbourne Beth Din currently based on the formula of an annual levy of $25 per Shule Seat Holder.
Reports were also given by Romy Leibler as the President of the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Australia (COSA) and Chairman of the Melbourne Beth Din.
COSA has been established to strengthen ties with smaller communities across Australia and to provide the Orthodox community with a voice at a National level.
The Melbourne Beth Din, as part of the plan to expand the area of involvement to Arbitration and Commercial Dispute Resolution, recently held a 3 day course opened by Attorney-General Rob Hulls MP and attended by more than 17 Rabbis. Speakers included Peter Callahan from the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia, recently appointed Jewish Supreme Court judge Justice Michael Sifris, Justice Julie Anne Dodds Streeton, Justice Clyde Croft, retired Justice David Byrne together with Ian Waller SC and George Golvan QC and the Beth Din honorary legal counsel, Jeffrey Appel.
Special guest speaker at the COSV Meeting was Dr Peter Kloot who provided an overview of the Melbourne Eruv and details of future expansion plans across Dandenong Road.
The Annual General Meeting of the COSV is scheduled to take place on Monday 29th November 2010.
