Inga Peulich is organising a petition to retain SRI during school hours. She is the Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region, Shadow Minister for Scrutiny of Government, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs. Whilst the COSV is non-partisan, we feel that the petition itself is the issue here, and we support the purpose and the aim of the petition. Inga Peulich writes:
Every family has the right to have their children taught in a state school about religious history - during school hours - whatever their faith may be. That’s the way it’s been in Victoria for decades.
Prior to the last state election, Daniel Andrews promised that he would not scrap Religious Instruction (SRI) during school hours. Now the state government has announced that they will break this promise they made to parents and students.
Currently, SRI is voluntary and can be provided for 30 minutes per week during school hours to children whose families choose to undertake SRI. Under Daniel Andrews’ plan, from next year students will have to stay after school or miss their lunch break to receive limited SRI.
I need your help to make Daniel Andrews listen to Victorians and reverse this decision.
To do this we need to show how important this issue is to families in Melbourne’s South East. I have attached a petition to distribute amongst members of your community – once it is filled out I’d be very appreciative if you could please return it to my office so I can table it in Parliament.
With your support, we can put pressure on Daniel Andrews and the Labor Government to reverse this decision.
Thanks for your help,
