Islamic interpretations of Torah

כ"ג תמוז ה' אלפים תשס"ט

There is an interesting Responsum by Maimonides highlighting the difference between Islam and Christianity in regard to teaching Jewish interpretations of Torah to adherents of these two religions. Here it is in the original hebrew text. The interesting part is halfway down (Vemuttar lelamed hamitzvos ...) :

... and it is permitted to teach the mitzvot and their [proper Jewish] interpretations to Nazarites (Christians) according to Jewish Law; but not one bit of this is permitted to the Ishmaelites (Muslims), because you already know that they believe that this Torah is not of divine origin, and if you teach them any of its words it will contradict their traditions, because their actions have become muddled ..... and it will cause us trouble ... .

However the uncircumcised (ie the Christians) agree with us on the text of scripture, it is with them exactly as it is with us, it's just that they have added some extra damaged / flawed / faulty interpretations for which they have found hints which they use; and if one explains to them the proper interpretation they could recant, and even if they don't recant there is still no stumbling block to a Jew because their text is not contradictory to ours. signed
