Websites should shut down on Shabbat

י"ד שבט ה' אלפים תשס"ט

The Mara Deasra of Kfar Chabad, Harav Mordechai Ashkenazi has issued a Psak Din regarding web access on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Most websites operate 24 hours daily, 365 days a year, including Shabbos and Yom Tov, which causes a serious problem of Chillul Shabbos for surfers and webmasters alike. In the psak, Rabbi Ashkenazi recommends the use of SaturdayGuard software, built by a Lubavitcher which blocks web access on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

Here are the comments lifted from the chabad.info site

Every single chabad(or at least they call themselves Chabad) website should have saturdayguard, it is sad that only 1 website which is chabad.info has this program, all websites should have it.

2. Shabbos Guard!

They should switch their name to Shabbos Guard instead of SaturdayGuard

Thanks chabad.info for having this SaturdayGuard because a few times by the beginning of Shabbos(in the 18 minutes)and I was on the internet and when I clicked on chabad.info the SaturdayGuard poped up, so that was a good warning and I shut the computer, and all thanks to chabad.info but a few times on Motzei Shabbos I went on chabad.info and this was almost 1 hour after Shabbos was over, and when I went on chabad.info the SaturdayGuard poped up even though it was Motzei shabbos, so make sure that it only pops up when it is really shabbos.

SaturdayGuard is also good, because Goyim can't check the websites on shabbos.

5. why goyim

why do they have a restriction?

To post #5

What does "Restriction" mean???

7. Websites

I don't understand the reason for this psak.

Can the Rabbonim clarify their reasoning please. Our computers also have keep Shabbos?... then do we have to also shut off power plants and generators on Shabbos also?

8. Another thing

Zeiv BS"D

The psak above says about Chillul Shabbos by going to the website... Again, unclear reasoning. Turning on the computer and connecting it to the INternet is not Chillul Shabbos, only going to THAT specific website is? Why does the Website have to keeps Shabbos? Please clarify the psak and ITS REASONONG ACCORDING TO HALOCHO.

9. One more thing

According to this reasoning, SaturdayGuard itself is doing Chillul SHabbos by activating itself on Shabbos and displaying the image with wording and blocking your Website.

Is this really a "psak", or is it an advertisement for a web product?
