Jewish Emergency Management Plan (JEMP) coordinates the Jewish community's resources during major emergencies affecting the Victorian Jewish community. JEMP runs a community emergency information hotline (1800 18 18 16) during such emergencies. It is also a one-stop-shop for emergency services to access the resources of the Jewish community.

Recently, the Red Cross, which runs the State Inquiry Centre (SIC), called on JEMP to provide its trained emergency call-takers (from its emergency information hotline) as a back up to the Bushfire Information hotline as staff of the SIC were becoming exhausted and JEMP volunteers assisted with this task last week.

We have just received another call from the SIC this morning as they are again heading into a bad fire period this week during which time communities may have to be evacuated and registrations of evacuees and those who are looking for them will become overwhelming.

On this occasion, they do not necessarily require trained call-takers but volunteers who:

  • are over 18 years of age
  • can remain calm under pressure
  • are able to handle calls from people who will be stressed because they are looking for loved ones
  • are comfortable enough with computers to enter registration details onto the SIC computer system
  • will maintain confidentiality

If you are willing and able to assist, the SIC requires people to volunteer in their North Melbourne office on any days you are available this week for any of the following shifts:

  • 8:00 am - 2:00 pm (you need to be available for complete shift)
  • 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm (you need to be available for complete shift)
  • 8:00 pm - 2:00 am (you need to be available for complete shift)

...then call the head of SIC rostering, Rosemary Dow, on 8327 7743 or 0488 652 393 and give the following information:

the fact that you have heard about this through the JEMP email

  1. your name
  2. your contact details
  3. the shifts you are available

If you have not entered data onto the SIC National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS) before, you will need to arrive at your shift 1 hour before your shift is due to start.
Kosher food is not provided.
In addition, if you are interested in volunteering for JEMP's emergency information line, please email the JEMP Administrator, Danielle Dyskin at danielle.dyskin@jemp.org.au to register your interest for the next training course.
