Chicago... The Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc) issued an alert last week that all honey sold in retail or foodservice packaging requires a reliable hashgacha. The cRc noted that
'this is due to the fact that the kashrus status of the bottling process for these honeys may be compromised due to the possibility of non-kosher products being packaged on the same equipment.'
A Manhattan retailer noted that
many kosher people still pick up a bottle of honey thinking "What can be wrong with something that comes from bees?"
The cRc alert is designed to make consumers look for kosher certification in honey as well.
PS. For Pesach, the actual honey needs a hechsher as corn syrup is a known substitute.
PPS. The major brands of honey in Australia are certified by Kosher Australia – Capilano, Barnes, Beechworth, Archibald, Leabrook Farms and the Coles brands.
