COSV LEVY FOR ALL
The Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria (COSV) has embarked on an ambitious campaign to ensure that every person in Orthodox Jewish Community equally accepts the obligation to share the cost of maintaining the Communal infrastructure irrespective of Synagogue membership or affiliation.
Until recently, the COSV has been operating from funding received from its Member Shules supplemented by contributions and donations from Non Member Synagogues and Minyanim.
In explaining the concept, President of the COSV, Paul Korbl stated that the past practice of only asking COSV Member Shules to contribute to the needs of the Orthodox Community leaving it to the remainder to decide on the amount of donation (if any) is inequitable and the new system will ensure fairness to all. Henceforth the individual members of the Community will be asked to pay an annual levy of $25 to be collected by the Orthodox Synagogues throughout Melbourne.
The COSV is the formally incorporated roof body of Orthodox Synagogues in the State of Victoria and is mandated to represent the interests of and to act as the central Authority for the coordinating and administering of religious life within the Orthodox Jewish Community.
The management of the COSV is entrusted to a Board of Management elected by the Member Congregations and provides the opportunity for the lay leadership to raise and be involved in issues of mutual concern.
