Tu B'Shvat and the Bushfires... It would be appropiate today, for us to put money aside/donate to towards re claiming the environment and the planting of trees in the bushfire effected areas.

Having personally experienced being caught up in a bushfire, (evacuated twice within the one week during the 1962* Dandenong Ranges bushfires) I can relate albeit in a very small way with the terrible unspeakable tragedy unfolding in Victoria. As citizens of Victoria, not only must we pray for the safety and welfare of our less fortunate neighbours and the valiant firefighters and other services dealing with this catastrophe, but……at this moment of need…………urgent material assistance is required.

As you have probably heard by now, tragically, the entire township of Marysville has been destroyed by fire. All buildings have been burnt to the ground except for one. The Cumberland Resort and Villa Day Spa has been utterly destroyed and Ann, the owner, lost her father in the fire. The people there have been evacuated to Alexandra and other areas, and are basically homeless. I am deeply saddened by this sudden tragedy. However, I am vigorously looking for new resorts that will be able to accommodate us for Pesach. I have one positive response so far, and am still waiting to hear from other beautiful 4-5 star resorts Please bear with me for a few days till I hear back from the many resorts that I have already contacted. I am going to consider only those that are of a high standard and who will be willing to work with me on making it all successful. You will, no doubt, understand my predicament, and I ask for your patience. May Hashem help the poor victims of the fire.

Like so many others I have been watching the news regarding the fires in Victoria and how it has ravaged homes and lives in communities very to our own, and I count my blessings, while wondering what I can do to help people who have lost EVERYTHING! A person alone isn’t going to make much of a dent, so I thought if I send an email to everyone I know in Melbourne and asked them to send an email to everyone they know and so on, then we can make a collective difference! I rang up my Rabbi, who has graciously opened the Synagogue for people to drop off items that will be useful to those in need, such as bedding, towels, toys for the children whose homes have been destroyed, and any other items that you may deem useful for these families. Hopefully, before long, we will have collected enough to ease some of the suffering that these people are going through. You can drop off these items at the Moorabbin Hebrew Congregation, 960 Nepean Hwy. Moorabbin in Melbourne between the hours of: 3.30pm – 6pm Monday, 9 February 2009 9.00am – 10.00am and 2.00 – 4pm Tuesday, 10 February 2009 9.00 am – 10.00am and 8.00 - 9.30pm Wednesday, 11 February 2009 8.00 - 9.30pm Thursday, 12 February 2009 We will arrange collection and delivery to the affected families from there. If you are unable to drop anything off during these times, but would like to donate to these families, you can either ring the Red Cross Appeal on 1800 811700 or please contact me on 0431 277 496 to arrange for an alternative drop off. Also, if anyone is able to give of their time, so that we can extend these drop off hours, please let me know ASAP.

Message: re the current bushfires in Vic, I think this is the time to show solidarity with the Victorian community by 1)holding a night of Tefila 2)a public appeal for money, blankets, white goods, 3) an appeal for Jews to donate blood through the Red Cross I would be happy to assist.
