Log of Scholar in Residence visit

כ"ה סיון ה' אלפים תשס"ט

Our Scholars in Residence, Rabbi Avraham and Rachel Trugman, oc_rabbi_rachelwere welcomed to Melbourne with a cocktail reception at the home of the Mays on Tuesday, 9 June 2009.  They were formally welcomed by Moshe Trebish and Rabbi Trugman gave those present an introduction to his dulcima, a guitar-like instrument that rests on his knees when playing it.  The following Wednesday evening he began his crash course on Jewish Spirituality and Mysticism at Central Shule and on Thursday evening shared 'an evening of musical enchantment' with Y-Love at East Melbourne Shule.  Over 130 people enjoyed hearing both sets of life stories as well as their music and it was a great night of entertainment followed by a light supper.

On Friday, 12 June 2009 South Caulfield Shule hosted a Carlebach Shabbaton with 145 attendees and families booking late having to be turned away, unfortunately.  He spoke on the mystical meaning of dreams and the evening was a great success.  He attended Brighton Shule the next morning, spoke from the pulpit, davened Mussaf and spoke at the Luncheon attended by 80 people on the topic of Unifying Secular Knowledge and Torah Wisdom.  He returned to South Caulfield Shule for Minchah, Seudat Shlishit and Ma'ariv, including a very meaningful Havdalah.  On that Saturday evening he and Rachel attended a Melavah Malka/jam session organised by HaMayan at the home of Pearl and Steve Dreyer in Balaclava Road and for the 50 - 60 people in attendance it was a great night, extending beyond midnight.

After spending Sunday morning and afternoon at Healesville Sanctuary and in the Dandenongs, Rabbi Trugman spoke at Mizrachi on 'Waiting for the Messiah.  What's all the Fuss About' and on Monday morning, 15 June 2009 visited Mount Scopus Memorial College in Burwood.  He spoke on Jewish Leadership, Mysticism and Meditation/Relaxation through music which, by all accounts, also went very well.  He then attended a UJEB at Gardenvale Primary School in Brighton and on Monday evening, 15 June 2009 spoke at Chabad House Carnegie on 'Psychology and Torah'.  There were over 40 people in attendance and lively discussion followed his address.

On Tuesday, 16 June 2009 he returned to Mount Scopus College to speak and then visited Bialik College where he spoke on 'Secrets of the Star of David'.  He also had a session with the teachers and spoke on 'A Holistic and Integrative Model of Jewish Education'.

On Wednesday, 17 June 2009 he conducted a Lunch 'n' Learn session at Chabad of Melbourne CBD and spoke on 'The Role of Business and Money in Jewish Life'.  On that same Wednesday evening he continued the crash course on Jewish Spirituality and Mysticism at Central Shule.

On Friday and Saturday, 19 and 20 June 2009 he and Rachel will be spending the whole of Shabbat at Kew Shule and that will be followed, on Saturday evening, with a 'Kum Sitz' and jam session also at Kew Shule.  For the remainder of the programme, i.e. Sunday, 21 June 2009 to Tuesday, 30 June 2009, please see the official Programme on this site.  In addition, the Trugmans have enjoyed the hospitality of Melbourne families and have been very well received by those fortunate to have heard them speak and have met them.
