The eruv is kosher for Shabbat 18-19 August 2023 / 2 Ellul 5783

Friday, 6 December 2024

The Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria (COSV) condemns in the strongest possible terms the arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea early this morning, Friday, 6 December 2024. This violent act is an assault on the Jewish community’s right to worship and a disturbing reminder of the persistent threat of antisemitism.

The Adass Israel Synagogue, a cornerstone of Jewish life in Melbourne, has provided spiritual guidance and a sense of community for many. The attack not only targets the Adass Israel congregation but the entire Jewish community and all non-Jewish communities around the world, as we stand united against such hate-driven acts. Our prayers go out to those injured in the incident, the emotional impact on the Adass Israel community is profound. The fire caused significant damage to the synagogue’s structure, and the trauma from this attack will reverberate for a long time.

This act of antisemitic violence is a stark reminder that despite our progress, hatred and bigotry still exist in our society. We express our deepest solidarity with Adass Israel and stand firmly against all forms of antisemitism. The timing of this attack, just days before Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, makes it all the more tragic. It is a reminder that there are those who seek to extinguish the light of Jewish tradition and faith.

The COSV offers its full support to the Adass Israel community during this difficult time. We welcome all members of Adass Israel to reach out to join any of the synagogues within the COSV network. Our doors are open, and we stand ready to support them as they begin the process of healing and rebuilding.

We also call on the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and stronger measures should be taken to protect our communal institutions from further attacks. The safety of Jewish institutions should be a priority for all levels of government.

This attack is a reminder of the need for a united stand against all forms of hate. Antisemitism is not just a Jewish issue—it is a societal issue that requires the collective efforts of all communities. We reaffirm our commitment to educating the wider public on the importance of tolerance and mutual respect.
